Chinese Electric Cars Lag Far Behind, This Brand Sells Well in the United States

Quoted from Kelley Blue Book EV Q1 2025, as many as 296,227 electric cars were sold throughout January-March 2025 in the United States (US). This figure is up 11.4 percent from last year which recorded 265,981 units.

BYD, Chery, Wuling are the best-selling Chinese manufacturers in Indonesia thanks to electric car sales. However, these brands are not on the list of best-selling electric cars in the United States.

From the best-selling electric car lineup above, why are there no Chinese electric car brands in the US?

Quoted from CNN International, high import tariffs are the reason Chinese brands have not entered the US market.

After dominating its home market in China, the world’s largest car market, BYD has begun to expand globally, with important exceptions such as America.

Although not present in the US, Chinese manufacturers such as BYD are making inroads in other countries.

BYD, a champion of electric cars from China based in Shenzhen, beat Tesla in annual sales last year.

BYD launched a revolutionary battery charging technology that it says can add 250 miles of range in five minutes, surpassing Tesla’s Supercharger, which takes 15 minutes to add 200 miles of range. And last month, BYD launched “God’s Eye,” an advanced driver assistance system that rivals Tesla’s full self-driving features, at no extra cost for most of its cars.

Those are just three examples of how BYD has managed to outdo Tesla. The company that Musk once ridiculed now effectively outperforms Tesla in sales, innovation and price competitiveness.

“They’re not resting on their laurels, as you can see from the God’s Eye announcement and the fast-charging announcement,” Tu Le, founder and managing director of consulting firm Sino Auto Insights, told CNN.
